We have three categories of membership:
- Associate: the initial “entry” level which is available immediately upon joining
- Friend: For those who wish to be a member and support us in Road Safety but who choose to not take their advanced test for now or at all.
- Full: Open to drivers and riders, with a full New Zealand Licence in the appropriate class and have passed the appropriate IAM RoadSmart advanced test.
Membership costs just $60.00 for 12 months and there’s a one-off joining fee of $50 (this covers among other things the test fee but will be treated as a contribution if no test is taken).

To become an IAM RoadSmart Member:
- Complete the application form below (no payment is necessary at this stage)
- Your local group will then arrange an initial assessment ride/drive with an Observer who will explain the process and answer any questions. There is no cost or obligation involved.
- Subject to the initial assessment, you are invited to join, paying the annual membership and joining fee (currently $110) once full payment is received you will then become an Associate Member. Thereafter it is just $60 on an annual basis.
- As an Associate member, you are assigned to one of our qualified Observers or Observer Teams who will mentor you on your journey to achieving our Advanced Test standard.
Once you pass our Advanced Test you will be awarded full membership status at no extra charge for the remainder of the financial year in which you join.
To maintain your membership you will need to pay an annual membership fee of just $60.00.
Want to join more than one category?
To maintain your membership to all classes, you need only to pay one annual membership fee of $60.00.
Great! You can join a second category (e.g. motorcycle in addition to car or vice versa) by paying a second test fee of $50 and buying Roadcraft for your second class (we currently gift you one copy for the first class chosen, subsequent copies can be purchased from us or other suppliers). Once done, you can start being observed in the second category. Your annual subscription remains the same, regardless of the number of categories you’ve joined.

The Joining/Signup process is the same. We may have a record of your pass or we may require you to show us your pass certificate. You can pay the annual membership fee (bank details above) and we’ll contact you.
